Preview

ATK Mohun Bagan head coach Antonio Lopez Habas will settle for nothing less than all three points when his side host FC Goa in the Indian Super League (ISL) tomorrow. The Mariners have conceded their position at the top of the table to Mumbai City after losing and drawing their last two matches respectively. However, their opponents won’t be easy meat having themselves built up a head of steam in their last two games.

It will be a test for both defences. While FC Goa have conceded at least once in each of their last six games barring the last match against Odisha FC, Bagan have conceded 3 in two games after starting the season with three clean sheets. The Mariners also have the third-lowest average possession of all teams at just 46%. On the other hand, Juan Ferrando’s men have averaged an impressive 59% possession till now which is the highest in the league.

Squad Overview

Although this match might be pitched as the battle between Igor Angulo (6 goals) and Roy Krishna (4 goals), it is much more than that. The battle between two tactically acute coaches with contrasting playing philosophies is also something that will whet the appetite of fans. The Mariners will still be without Javi Hernandez while central defender Tiri might also miss out due to injury. Subhasish Bose should come in. Glan Martins, Pronay Halder and Jayesh Rane all featured against Hyderabad and might aid the midfield setup. Sumit Rathi should get another start as well while Manvir Singh should also get another runout upfront.

FC Goa played their first three games in seven days and now play their next four in ten. It is for this reason that Juan Ferrando has been rotating his side a lot for the past few matches. That has meant extended gametime for the likes of Alexander Jesuraj, Princeton Rebello, Seminlen Doungel and Redeem Tlang. It also remains to be seen whether Ishan Pandita and Devendra Murgaonkar also get a look-in tomorrow. Ferrando’s handling of Brandon Fernandes has been especially commendable. The midfield schemer was introduced gradually in the first few games and now looks to be the fulcrum for the Gaurs during attacking transitions.
