Defensive midfielder Ajay Chhetri has joined SC East Bengal on loan from Bengaluru FC for the rest of the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign. The 21-year-old becomes the Red and Golds’ newest winter recruitment following the likes of Bright Enobakhare, Raju Gaikwad and Ankit Mukherjee.

The Manipur born lad joined the Bengaluru FC academy in 2016 through open trials and was amongst the longest serving players in their B team with whom he won the 2018-29 Bangalore Super Division. He played a crucial role for the reserves squad in their Durand Cup campaign too and coincidentally, scored a goal against East Bengal. The youngster was also recognized as the best U18 player at Bengaluru during the 2016-17 season.

Ajay is a typical linkman in midfield who likes to keep things simple and recycle possession efficiently. His performances for Bengaluru’s youth sides have been extremely promising and with four goals and five assists against his name, he was one of the best performers in the Super Division. The young midfielder was then drafted into the senior team for the 2018-19 season and went on to make a couple of appearances for the Blues. He then moved to Hyderabad FC on loan for the 2019-20 campaign and played twice for the Nizams last term.

Having signed a two-year contract extension with Bengaluru in April last year, the young colt now has a chance to impress at another big club and take further strides in his development. SC East Bengal are reportedly also on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and have been linked with a move for Customs’ Shubham Sen.
