SC East Bengal captain Daniel Fox is going to miss the match against NorthEast United in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Saturday. The 34-year-old Scotsman limped off with a foot injury early on in the match against Mumbai City FC. The medical team is now awaiting test results to determine the true extent of the injury.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, head coach Robbie Fowler all but confirmed this development. “This is why we have squads. It is a chance for the guy coming in to stand up and be counted. It is a chance for someone to put in a good performance and show everybody what he has got,” he replied while answering a question on Fox’s probable absence. There have also been rumours that Anil Chauhan and Milan Singh might be flown out to Goa from the reserve squad. However, even if that happens, they will have to stay in quarantine before they are allowed to join the bio-bubble.

With two losses, five goals conceded and zero goals scored in the first two matches of their debut ISL season, it looks like an uphill battle for the side. In NorthEast United, they will be up against a team that hasn’t been beaten so far. The Highlanders have already defeated Mumbai City as well as scored at least one goal in each of their three matches. It will therefore be difficult for the Red and Golds to contain Kwesi Appiah and company in the absence of their captain and defensive stalwart.

With matches coming thick and fast, Fowler has to work his magic quickly in order to win back the fans on his side. Striker Aaron-Amadi Halloway and defender Gurtej Singh are also sidelined due to injury while Jeje has just come back after a long layoff. In such a precarious situation, a victory against NorthEast will give the Liverpool legend a little more space to navigate the next few fixtures.
