The coronavirus pandemic has shaken the global economy. With no live events going on, naturally, the football market has also been affected — so much so that it is being projected that the prices of superstars like Kylian Mbappe, Jadon Sancho could go down massively.

It’s no secret that in Indian football, money has always been an issue. Late payment of salaries, prize money etc. have been known to be delayed. And now, Hyderabad FC players and Phil Brown, who was sacked as head coach mid-season, have informed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that they have not been paid this year via written letters.

As reported by the Hindustan Times, the new Indian Super League (ISL) franchise, which played its first season this year, have missed deadlines to pay some of their players and ex-coach.

“The foreign players are in discussion because all the payments from Hyderabad happened with delays of 2 or 3 months (sic). Of course, understandable because is a new franchise. The point is: all the deadlines have been told with lies and now with the corona outbreak, they said it is not possible to make any payment. We know the bank is open and working normally,” a foreign player was quoted saying.

The club’s official stand is that they have been in consultation with concerned parties and will comment at a more approrpriate time.

Nitin Pant, Chief Operating Officer, Hyderabad FC, said, “Under the extraordinary circumstances that has resulted after the COVID-19 outbreak, Hyderabad Football Club is in consultation with the concerned parties and the AIFF regarding any matters there may be. Considering the current scenario, we believe it will be right to comment on it at a more appropriate time.”

The AIFF, on their part, have acknowledged that they received letters from some players and Phil Brown. “We have reached out to Hyderabad FC who have sought time. I am hopeful the franchise will sort this out. If they don’t and we hear from the players and Brown again, we will take action,” said Kushal Das, the AIFF general secretary.
