Preview

FC Goa take on Mumbai City FC in the opening game of the second round of matches in this season’s Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday. This one should be another high-octane contest between two very strong sides, especially after both failed to win their opening game of the season. The venue for the match is the beautiful Fatorda Stadium in Margao.

Juan Ferrando’s FC Goa came back from 2-0 down to get a point against Bengaluru FC on Sunday but the Spanish head coach will be looking to improve on his side’s defensive showing. Sergio Lobera’s men on the other hand lost 1-0 against Northeast United the day before and will be without Ahmed Jahouh for the game against Lobera’s former side. Jahouh was let off with a one-match ban by the All India Football federation (AIFF) earlier today after his mistimed tackle on Khassa Camara. While Goa will be looking to preserve their 8-match unbeaten home run, Mumbai City will be trying to put the record straight after losing four of their last five matches against them.

Squad Overview

After a disappointing start to the ISL campaign, there seems to be no time to relax for Sergio Lobera as he plans to stop the likes of Igor Angulo and company. Brandon Fernandes should come into the starting eleven after playing a part in both goals on Sunday. The same goes for Alberto Noguera, who made the all-important assist for Angulo’s first goal against Bengaluru FC. The other assist provider, Alexander Romario Jesuraj might also get a look in after an impressive cameo from the right. Another young prospect, Saviour Gama, is now fit and should start on the left side of FC Goa’s defence. Also, any one of Jorge Ortiz, James Donachie and Ivan Gonzalez might have to sit out this one because of the five foreigners rule. If that happens, Aiban Dohling is the one who would probably be brought in into the heart of defence.

The Gaurs’ sensational comeback against Bengaluru notwithstanding, Ferrando will be wary of the threat that Mumbai City FC possess. In Bart Ogbeche, Adam Le Fondre and Hugo Boumous, they probably have the most fearsome foreign attacking trio in the ISL. The absence of Jahouh should come as a relief though, but Mumbai have some very promising names who will be hoping to take their chances. Cy Goddard impressed with his quick feet while Mourtada Fall could come in to replace Jahouh with Hernan Santana pushed into midfield. They also have Farukh Chaudhary, Vikram Pratap Singh, Bipin Singh and Vignesh Dakshinamurthy who could all play a part in midfield and attack. Raynier Fernandes however might have to sit out this one after suffering an injury on Saturday.
