SC East Bengal, who are set to make their Indian Super League (ISL) debut on Friday with a clash against arch rivals ATK Mohun Bagan FC, have named defender Daniel Fox as their captain for the 2020-21 season.

While other ISL clubs like FC Goa and ATK Mohun Bagan have announced 3-4 players as their captains for the campaign, East Bengal have gone with one captain only.

After securing a late entry into the ISL, the Red and Golds signed several quality foreign players under the guidance of head coach Robbie Fowler to strengthen their squad. From Anthony Pilkington to Jacques Maghoma, they onboarded star foreigners with Premier League experience in order to compete with the top teams in the ISL.

However, Fox, with his massive experience, seems to be the right choice for the captain. The defender, who graduated from the Everton academy, has played for years in the United Kingdom. In fact, he helped Scottish giants Celtic finish second in the Scottish Premiership in 2009-10 and also featured in the UEFA Champions League.

Fox then enjoyed Premier League football, first at Burnley and then, at Southampton. He was playing for Wigan Athletic in the Championship before moving to India.

“This is a big responsibility and I am ready for it. The Gaffer has shown his trust in me and I will not let him down," Fox said after being named captain.

Meanwhile, former Norwich City winger Pilkington was named as the vice-captain for the season.
