Having endured a devastating season in the Indian Super League (ISL) so far, Kerala Blasters FC are looking to make a few reinforcements out of the current transfer window to strengthen their squad. Reportedly, the club has shown interest in signing in Irish midfielder Glenn Whelan as sources close to the development can confirm. The 35-year-old defensive midfielder is currently a free agent after he was axed by newly recruited Hearts gaffer Daniel Standel.

Whelan joined the Hearts from Aston Villa last season as the later gained promotion to the Premier League. He has spent a major part of his career playing in the English top-flight as he played nine seasons of football for Stoke City. The Manchester City youth product is also a regular with 90 caps for the Ireland national football team and has played alongside legends like Robbie Keane.

The Kerala-based ISL side have suffered the most this season due to sequential injuries to their key players leading to a lack of momentum in the whole squad. Problems first arose for head coach Eelco Schatorrie when star defender Sandesh Jhinghan was ruled out for the whole season. Then, the worries only mounted as both Jairo Rodrigues and Gianni Zuiverloon joined Jhingan in the injury list.

They are currently in the 8th spot of the league table with 11 points. The Blasters have the most number of draws so far this season with only two wins, against ATK and Hyderabad FC. Should Whelan join, it could really help them get back on track and finish at a respectable position.

The team management are trying their best to bring back the winning momentum to the team and are in plans to solve the current scenario by bringing in some new players. A 5-0 win in their last match against Hyderabad FC could be the start of many good things for Kerala.
