Fran Gonzalez’s brace helps Mohun Bagan A.C. beat a below-par TRAU 4-0 and register their first win of the I-League 2019-20 at the Kalyani Stadium on Wednesday. With this win, the Mariners leap from ninth to the fourth place and coach Kibu Vicuna gets some breather.
Bagan, who kept on the pressure from the start of the match, found the net in the fifth minute as Fran Gonzalez seized an opportunity to slot in from a scramble in the box off a Joseba Beitia corner. Gurjinder Kumar and Daniel Cyrus in the defence made the TRAU attackers look hardly threatening, while Ashutosh Mehta had his presence felt across the right flank.
TRAU came close to scoring in the 19th minute when Julien Colinas missed a sitter from Nongdamba Norem inside the area. Bagan doubled their lead when Mehta, who received a superb long ball, crossed it across the face of the goal. Suhair slid to score in the 38th minute. Moments after the resumption, Gonzalez got his brace with a right-footed effort after the TRAU defence was caught napping.
TRAU hardly threatened the opposition goal in the first half and missed two golden opportunities in the second. Substitute Subha Ghosh’s 90th minute strike was the icing on the cake for Bagan.
