A seven-a-side football match in Areekode, Malappuram, turned deadly on Tuesday night after Chinese crackers misfired into the gallery, injuring at least 25 spectators.

Three fans have reportedly suffered severe burns and are undergoing treatment in private hospitals nearby.

According to the Circle Inspector, the incident occurred when fireworks were set off in the middle of the field.

However, due to a misfire, the crackers shot into the crowded stands, sparking chaos.

Rescue operations were carried out swiftly, and the injured were rushed to local hospitals. Authorities are assessing the situation, and despite the unfortunate incident, attempts were made to resume the match.

The incident occurred during a sevens football match, a seven-a-side version of football that is immensely popular in Kerala, especially in the Malappuram district.
