Indian Women's League champions Odisha FC made a historic debut at the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League 2024, on Sunday.
The team defeated Singapore's Lion City Sailors 4-1 in the preliminary round match at the Prince Mohammad Stadium in Jordan.
The win, marked by a brace from Lynda Kom, has set a promising tone for the Indian club as they aim for the next stage of the prestigious tournament.
Odisha FC broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, courtesy of an own goal following a well-placed corner by Neha. However, Lion City Sailors equalised just before half-time with a precise shot that left the Odisha defence rooted.
"We knew Lion City Sailors had a young squad with good pace and technical abilities, but the experience was in our favour, so we made use of it. I think on transition we were better than them," coach Crispin Chettri told The Bridge in an exclusive chat.
But the second half told a different story. Odisha FC emerged with renewed vigour that would prove decisive.
"In the second half, we made a few tactical changes, gave more freedom to the players, and did a high press," said the tactician, reflecting on the shift that led to Lynda Kom’s quickfire double in the 54th and 57th minute.
'Proud to be part of this team'
As the match drew to a close, an own goal from the Lion City Sailors in the 88th minute sealed Odisha’s victory, ensuring a massive 4-1 win ahead of their big clash against Etihad Club of Jordan.
"I'm so proud to be part of this team. I think not only me or the club but whoever supports women's football in India will be wishing good for us," boasted Crispin.
Crispin wary of Etihad
Looking ahead to their next match against the local favourite Etihad Club, Chettri remained cautious yet optimistic.
"Etihad will be a completely different ball game. We have a chance to see them play against the Singapore team, then we can do our preparation accordingly," he remarked.
Odisha FC will face Etihad Club on August 31, with the winner advancing to the group stage of the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League.
For now, though, Odisha FC can celebrate a remarkable start to their continental journey, with hopes high for continued success.
