Coronavirus: Ex-footballer stands beside girls who were once trafficked

While someone had to cross India's borders, someone had to leave the state and were led to suffering in the dark world of human trafficking. However, former footballer Dipendu Biswas is standing next to the trafficked girls who have been rescued back from the dark world. Presently an MLA from Basirhat in West Bengal, Dipendu is lending his helping hand to these helpless girls amid lockdown by providing them with food and security.

Basirhat has been a hotspot for human trafficking for ages and Dipendu has given all his efforts to stop the trafficking network in the area. Time and again, his measures have helped to rescue the girls and amid the lockdown, he is ensuring that they receive two-time meal every day. On Wednesday, he called up 23 girls and provided them with free ration and medical supplies.

In an interview with Bengali daily Ei Samay, Dipendu said, "Many of these girls were trafficked in Mumbai and Punjab, some even went to Bangladesh. After I became MLA, I made a list and rescued many of them. The girls are now self-sufficient after Chief Minister's provided them with grants from Bengal's Rupashree project."
