During the 31st minute of the Duran Cup semifinal between NorthEast United and Shillong Lajong, a controversial moment unfolded.
NorthEast United had the ball in the net, but the initial call was offside after a long ball from Nesta found Ajaraie.
The striker missed his first attempt but scored on the rebound, only to have the goal disallowed as the linesman raised the flag.
However, the main referee reversed the decision and awarded the goal to NorthEast United.
This reversal stood out as the game did not have VAR (Video Assistant Referee) to review the play and questions were immediately raised about the decision-making process.
Typically, such changes in decision-making without VAR involve discussions and clarification among the referees, who may review their own observations or consult with match officials on the field.
The reversal of the offside call, though unconventional, was ultimately deemed correct as Ajaraie was not in an offside position when the ball was played.
