I have been scrutinised but my mother always believed in me — Sakshi Malik
After winning the bronze in wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympics, wrestler Sakshi Malik became the talk of the town. Sakshi won a medal when it seemed like there was no hope for India to win.
At the time Sakshi was playing her final bout at the Rio games, her mother Sudesh Malik was in Rohtak watching her daughter create history, each move at a time. Video of her cheering as Sakshi won the medal went viral — many of us cheering along, as we saw her getting up and kissing the TV screen several times. '
On the occasion of Mother's Day, Sakshi Malik shares her thoughts on her mother who has been a strong pillar of support in her life, in the truest sense.
"From sports to other aspects of my life, my mother has been the strong pillar of support. Even for my studies, my mother has helped me immensely. With her support, I pursued sports and also completed my Master's degree in Physical Education. She helped me gather my notes for studies while I was busy in training. In every point of my life, she has been a supporter," says the wrestler from Rohtak.

The 27-year-old grappler has been subjected to criticism, often harsh, for her series of performances after Rio's success. However, the wrestler has been able to take everything in her stride, keeping heads down and went on to try even harder to prove her critiques wrong. Sakshi's name cannot be written off and a big chunk of credit goes to her mother. The wrestler says, "I had several ups and downs in my career, but it was mom, who never let any negativities affect me. I have been scrutinised by everyone else, and many said I won't be able to achieve anything. It was my mother who stood firmly and believed in me. Many faces the problem of being a woman and pursuing sports but she was always encouraging."
A mother's love and affection are truly unmatchable and probably there's no other relationship as strong as a bond between a mother and her child. Sudesh Malik has been nothing short of an inspiration. "Despite holding a government job, she never neglected us. Every morning she used to cook necessary wrestling diet food for me and after returning home from the office, she used to come and watch me train. She even used to cheer me from the stands during the domestic tournaments I played. Her sacrifices are immense and I won't ever forget her contribution in my life," says Sakshi.
The wrestler concludes with a strong message for every mother out there:
"Respect your mother, because she is the only person who will stand beside you in your success and failure, happiness and disappointments. We should all at some point of life try to make her proud."
