Former Liverpool FC legend Robbie Fowler is set to be named as the new head coach of Indian Super League (ISL) new boys East Bengal FC, The Bridge can confirm.

Former India international Renedy Singh will be assisting him, it has also been learnt, after Football Sports Development Ltd. (FSDL) officially confirmed the Red and Golds entry into this season's ISL as the 11th team of the league earlier today.

East Bengal had begun talks with Fowler right after they had secured Shree Cement Ltd. as their investors. In fact, the ex-Premier League striker's profile was one of the first ones to reach the Kolkata giants. However, in the days to come, several high profile names like Sven-Goran Eriksson, Jose Pekerman and others, also threw in their hats.

However, eventually, the 100-year-old club decided to go for a young coach who would be hungry for success and be able to drive them to success in their debut ISL campaign.

Fowler, 45, played over 250 Premier League matches for Liverpool across two stints, scoring 128 goals. He also featured for Leeds United, Manchester City and other clubs before turning to coaching

His first experience of managing a club came in 2011-12 with Thailand's top division side Muangthong United where he was appointed as the club's player-manager in the middle of the season. Fowler guided the team to a third-placed finish at the end of the season.

His next stint would be just this last season, as he was working as the head coach of A-League side Brisbane Roar. Under him, Roar finished fourth in the league stage with 40 points from 26 matches and had made it to the Finals Series of the competition.
