East Bengal FC are close to securing the services of renowned goalkeeping coach Bobby Mimms ahead of their debut Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, The Bridge understands. The Englishman has previously worked in India having been associated with Jamshedpur FC and ATK in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 ISL seasons respectively.

The 56-year-old, who has worked alongside prominent managers like Mick McCarthy, Sam Allardyce and Neil Lennon in England, is known as a strict disciplinarian and someone who can get the best out of goalkeepers by improving their technique, ball handling and most importantly their command over the penalty area.

A member of the Premier League-winning Blackburn Rovers team in 1995, Mimms’ last assignment was with the Bangladesh national team and he was a part of the coaching staff when India took on their neighbours for a World Cup qualifier in October last year.

The experienced campaigner boasts a highly impressive CV featuring spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, Bolton Wanderers and Hull City. With East Bengal looking for a shake-up of its coaching staff, Mimms may well be the first new name in the club’s roster in that department. His experience will definitely come in handy for an East Bengal side that will be looking to establish a strong defensive foundation.

With the new head coach not yet being confirmed officially by the club, this news should provide some respite to Red and Gold fans with respect to the direction in which the club is headed. It is surely going to be an interesting next few weeks as the club races against time to assemble a competitive and well-balanced outfit, both in terms of playing personnel as well as coaching staff.
