Putting an end to years of speculations after it was played as a demonstration event in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games; e-sports was officially approved as a medal sport for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games during the 39th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) held in Muscat on Wednesday.

The OCA approved the proposal put forward by the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee and added e-sports and break dancing as official events for the 2022 Games. With these two additions, the Asian Games will now see a total of 42 medalled events.

While, e-sports will be included "intellectual title" category alongside chess, break dancing will be categorised as "sports dance".

According to the announcement made during the meeting, it is expected that a total of six gaming titles will be a part of the Asian quadrennial event though the names of the games are yet to be disclosed.

In the 2018 Asian Games five titles – League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Pro Evolution of Soccer 2018, StarCraft II, Hearthstone and Clash Royale were played as demonstration sport.

Tirth Mehta from the state of Gujarat had then returned home with a bronze medal for India in the card based game Hearthstone.
