So Day 1 was a mixed bag of emotions and results for India at the All England Open 2018. Some of the biggest names failed to make a mark while some survived frights and came out in one piece. The most disappointing part of the day was Saina Nehwal's straight games loss to Tai Tzu-Ying. The Indian shuttling superstarar looked far from in control of the match in the first game where she went down 14-21, which she was trailing 4-9 early on. Saina took control of the match in the second game Saina then extended the lead to 16-11, but the defending champion made it 15-16 and took control thereon. The game ended 18-21. Thankfully, Sindhu saved the day in women's single where she managed to crawl her way to the second round after faltering a little too many times initially against Pompowee. She won the match in three games 20-22, 21-17, 21-9. In Men's singles, Sai Praneeth made a first round exit despite picking up the first game. Korean shuttler Son Wan Ho took Praneeth out 13-21, 21-15, 21-11. H.S. Prannoy had a better outing of the day as he found his way into the second round after taking down Chou Tien Chen 9-21, 21-18, 21-18.

In women's doubles, India's Meghana Jakkampudi and Poorvisha Ram lost 14-21, 11-21 to fifth seeds Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto. It was no better for the Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy duo either who lost their match against Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi 21-14, 21-13. In Men's doubles, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy suffered a heartbreak. They lost 20-22, 12-21 to Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge of England in their opening round match.
