In the time spanning between July 17-23, New Delhi is all set to host the Asian Junior Wrestling Championships but true to reputation, there has been a cloud of doubt about whether the event can take place smoothly at all. According to reports, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is yet to get clearance from the Home Ministry so as to enable foreign participants to travel to India to be a part of the event. According to a report in The Tribune, the host federation is directed to get a level three clearance from the Government so as to legally play organisers of a particular tournament. The WFI, so far, has been in talks with the Sports Ministry but nothing seems to have materialised. On the other hand, the dates for the event are inching closer. The three level clearances include letters from the
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)
in addition to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). Of these, the MHA is yet to grace the WFI with a suitable reply. The inital letter to the three hands of the Government was sent on June 10 with a follow up being sent on June 18 by the WFI. According to the same report in The Tribune, the MEA then provided the WFI with a no objection certificate pending clearance from the MHA and the MYAS. "As hosts, it is our duty to get all the clearances from our government. MHA’s clearance is must as without it, no Indian embassy abroad will grant a visa to travel to India," a WFI official was quoted as saying.
“But we have not got any feedback about why the clearance is not being issued,” he continued. “Big teams like Japan and Iran want to come by July 15, which is the first day for the teams to arrive. Now we’re heading into the weekend, so another three days are gone. It will be touch and go for some of the countries to get the visa in time. I hope this issue gets sorted in time because if it doesn’t, it will reflect badly on us as hosts.” Nations like Japan and Uzbekistan are expected to send their wards to the tournament. By definition, these countries are wrestling superpowers and the exposure would have done a heap of good to junior level Indian wrestlers. The matter is yet to be sorted.
