After a couple of weeks of intense action, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 will see the Indian women's cricket team taking on hosts Australia in the final on Sunday, 8th March, 2020 — which, coincidentally, is also celebrated worldwide as International Women’s Day.

The likes of Shafali Varma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Poonam Yadav have taken the World Cup by storm and, thanks to them, for the first time, the Women in Blue have reached the World T20 finals. But the job is not yet done, they face the formidable Australia in the final, who, on their part, will be hungry for revenge after the group stage defeat to India.

All of this makes up for an exciting contest, something that cricket aficionados around the world are always looking forward to. Unsurprisingly, the demand for tickets is quite high and the final could very well see the highest ever attendance at a standalone women’s sporting fixture, which currently stands at 90,185.

Ahead of the tournament, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket Australia (CA) had laid bare their plans of drawing as many spectators as possible for the final, which will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). While grandstand redevelopment and occupational health and safety legislation have limited the maximum seating capacity to approximately 95,000, with an additional 5,000 standing room capacity, the total capacity stands at 100,024.

The opening match between Australia and India attracted 13,432 fans to Sydney Showground Stadium, a record crowd for a standalone women’s cricket match in Australia. But Sunday’s final will easily eclipse it. Even before the group stage had gotten over, 50,000 tickets had been sold, as per a report in cricket.com.au.

And with hosts Australia making it to the final, alongside cricket-crazy India, the demand for tickets has seen an unprecedented high. The 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup final at Lord’s also saw a packed stadium but even then, the demand in the days before the final was not as high.

Australian fans have turned out in numbers to support their top-ranked national team and are expected to fill up the stands once more, come Sunday.
