Kevin Pietersen, one of England’s best batsmen in recent history, played extensively in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In fact, he captained both Bangalore and Delhi, and amassed over 1,000 runs in 37 IPL matches during his playing time.

He also held the distinction of being the highest-paid player in IPL history when he was bought for £1.1m in 2009 by Royal Challengers Bangalore. In fact, many had put their bets on the franchise to win the trophy that season but they fell short, losing in the final to Deccan Chargers.

In this video, he discusses why his IPL career was so important for him, including: “You could learn from the greats of the game, you could understand how they practised, how they spoke, how they approached, how they were in team meetings, how thorough they were in everything that they did — from how they padded up to what they talked about before they went out to bat,” he said.

The former English batsman also talked about his captaincy stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore back in 2009. The star-studded team Pietersen captained had the likes of Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Dale Steyn, Mark Boucher and a young Virat Kohli. And yet, as a foreign captain, life was a little difficult.

He also mentioned why he was so desperate to take part, the financial benefits, the pressure, and more.
