No matter if MS Dhoni has bid adieu to international cricket, no matter his team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is languishing at the sixth position of the Indian Premier League (IPL), for us Indians, Dhoni's demeanour as 'Captain Cool' is still every bit of alive. Mahi's aura in the cricket-crazy nation of India reigns supreme in the heart of fans - from debating to sports betting, to brand association Dhoni's imagery speaks volume of his omnipresence. His brand value has not diminished. Had this been an IPL with the presence of an audience, the chant of "Mahi... Mahi" would have still reverberated around the stands.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's success has garnered him large brand endorsement deals. Dhoni has been associated with brands like Pokerstars, Cars24, Indian Terrain, redBus, Panerai, Ashok Leyland, Powerade, Snickers, Dream11, Gulf Oil India, Indigo Paints, realtor Sumadhura Group and others, Sunfeast Yipee Noodles, SRMT TMT Bar, Oppo Mobile phone, among others.

At 39, it is estimated Dhoni charges Rs 1.5 crore for every ad shooting. His retirement didn't diminish his brand value, and many contracts are still in force with the IPL gaining more prominence in the television front this year. According to a study, published by Duff & Phelps Celebrity Brand Valuation, Dhoni had a brand value of $41.2 million in 2019, placing him at the ninth spot, up from the previous year’s rank 12. He was the only cricketer in the list of top 10 celebrities, topped by Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli. As per the study, in 2019, Kohli’s brand value rose by 39 per cent to $237.5 million. Dhoni who was on a long sabbatical since July 2019, made a three-place jump from 2018 rank of 12.

One has to consider, Dhoni is nowhere in the list of world of richest athletes. On the other hand, Kohli was ranked 66th in Forbes' World's highest-paid athletes list 2020. He is one of just three Indian cricketers selected for the nation's A+ contracts, which guarantee an annual salary of $1 million in 2020 and his popularity helps him earn more than $20 million annually from endorsement partners like Audi, Hero, MRF, Puma, Valvoline and more. Kohli was the only Indian in the list.
