Bhawanipore FC’s Liberian centre-forward Ansumana Kromah appeared to have broken quarantine protocol as he joined friends for a friendly game of football in Mukundapur on Friday, as per reports in local media.

This came just three days after his second positive Covid test in as many weeks. Kromah, who has turned out for both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in the I-League, had been dropped from the side for the I-League qualifiers for the same reason and did not feature in Bhawanipore’s opening-day encounter against FC Bengaluru United.

The 28-year-old broadcasted himself, without a mask, on Facebook live while at the ground. He had previously undergone tests on the 29th of September and then again on the 6th of October, both of whom returned positive.

Questions have been raised about the team management’s handling of the situation as well as his own judgement, as he was clearly seen to be coming in close physical contact with other players in the video. With the entire Bhawanipore team housed at Hyatt Regency inside a bio-bubble for the ongoing I-League qualifiers, it is still not clear how Kromah was allowed to leave the premises, that too after two consecutive positive results.

The player himself claimed that he isn’t symptomatic and is feeling completely fit. He also suggested that his test had come negative before entering the team hotel but since then, subsequent results had been positive, and that this was something that had left him disillusioned.

It remains to be seen if any action is taken against him by the club following this incident. However, when contacted, Indian Football Association (IFA) Secretary Joydeep Mukherjee said that the federation didn’t have any knowledge about this and that they would look into the matter at the earliest. Kromah has since deleted the video from his Facebook wall.
