The much-awaited Commonwealth Games is about to start in Gold Coast on April 5, and the athletes are already making their way to the island nation for the sporting extravaganza. After winning the bid in November 2011 ahead of Hambantota, the city got the right to host the Games. This is the fifth time that Australia is hosting the event! A total of 71 Commonwealth Nations will fight it out during 10 days of competitive action to reign supreme over the others. A total of 275 Gold medals will be up for grabs across 19 disciplines! The opening ceremony will be staged at the Carrara Stadium on April 4 while the closing will be held in the same venue on the 15
th
of the same month. The Maldives was about to participate but they withdrew from the Commonwealth in October 2016. A massive Games village with an accommodation of 6600 athletes has been built for the visitors. 1170 one and two bedrooms and 82 three bedrooms have been installed at Southport. The whole country is making it last minute preparations for the mega event, along with 'Borobi', the official mascot of the Commonwealth Games! A strong Indian contingent will be taking the long flight to Australia with dream full of eyes! In the last edition of the meet, India performed pretty well and even finished in the top 5 of the medals tally. Athletes from our country will be eager to better the performance this time around. The strength of Indian contingent for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is 325 which include 221 athletes, 58 coaches, 7 managers, 17 doctors and physiotherapists and 22 officials. Many others have been excluded prior to the selection of the main list by India's Sports Authority which mainly included family members of athletes, a few coaches, doctors and also travelers. With 15 Gold, 30 Silver and 19 Bronze medals respectively, India secured 64 Gold medals to sit comfortably in the 5
th
position of the tally in Glasgow four years back. They were behind leaders England, Australia, Canada and hosts Scotland. With a much dynamic set of athletes making the cut to the Games this time, India would be aiming no less than a top three finish! Here is the discipline wise Commonwealth Games schedule.
