A few notable misses in the squad announced for Boxing at the Commonwealth Games as World Championship medallists Shiva Thapa and Gaurav Bhiduri were left out of the squad for Gold Coast. However, the contingent seems strong enough with the likes of Mary Kom and Vikas Krishnan in the fray. Shiva Thapa's miss was ominous as three-time Asian medallist and 2015 world championship bronze-winner lost out to Manish Kaushik twice so far, in national championship final and India Open semifinal, with Manish winning on both occasions in the lightweight category. In the 56-kg category, Bhiduri has been replaced by Mohammed Hussamuddin who recently won a bronze at Strandja Memorial in Sofia Bulgaria. Bhiduri has been out of action since his world Championship medal winning performance owing to an injury and he unfortunately misses out on a Commonwealth Games berth as well.
91kg and 52kg categories are yet to have selection trials as names have not been confirmed for these two categories yet. The trials for the same will be conducted on March 1 and 4 respectively. Among the women, world silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi's inclusion in the 51kg division will based on her performance in a competition trip to Kazakhstan beginning on March 2. India Open and Strandja Open performances have definitely played a key role in the selection. In the women's team, Mary Kom was expectedly picked in the 48kg category after winning her third consecutive international medal in the past four months. L Sarita Devi retained her place in the 60kg category.
Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) was selected based on her gold-winning performance in the India Open. However, 57kg categories still have no names as the Federation has decided to drop the category and not field any boxers. This comes despite protests of boxers like Sonia Lather who along with Youth Championship Gold Medalist Shashi Chopra will be the ones most affected. The squad:
Men: Amit Panghal (49kg), Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg), Manish Kaushik (60kg), Manoj Kumar (69kg), Vikas Krishan (75kg), Satish Kumar (+91kg)
To be decided: 91kg -- Sumit Sangwan/Naman Tanwar
52kg -- Gaurav Solanki/Salman Sheikh
