Chitharesh Natesan, a Delhi-based bodybuilder from Kochi, became the first Indian to win the Mr Universe 2019 crown at the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship that was staged in Jeju, South Korea this week. Natesan won the Mr World 2019 title in the 90 kg division category and competed with the Mr World 2019 winners from other weight categories to emerge as the overall winner to win the Mr Universe 2019.

India finished second in the Championship with 23 medals including six gold, 13 silver and four bronze medals. They also came second in the team championship, with Thailand coming first. Thirty-eight nations participated in the event that is held every year.

Natesan was an avid hockey player before he turned his focus to bodybuilding when he was pursuing a BA course in History from Maharajas College in Kochi. He went on to complete a course in Physical Education in the Lakshmibai National College in Thiruvananthapuram, following which he went to New Delhi to work as a fitness trainer.

Once there, Natesan went on to win the title of Mr Delhi four times and also won the Mr India 2015 award under the guidance of his trainer MV Sagar. His winning streak continued thereafter, as he clinched the Mr World title in 2018 as well. He also won the International Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation Mr Asia 2019 in Indonesia in September.

Natesan was congratulated by the Indian Bodybuilding Physique Sports Federation after the monumental feat. He is now hoping for a sponsor, as the earnings he gets from his job as a fitness trainer is spent on training equipment and diet. He told The Week, “The Indian Body Building Federation bore all the expenses to send us to South Korea. It has been a big help. “There are some openings in the Customs, Railways and Income Tax departments. I am trying. Let's see.”
