Having spent five years in the sports industry, Vansh Sharma believes this role of a Project Manager for the Global Chess League stands out as the most intriguing and impactful he has undertaken.

With responsibilities spanning marketing, finance, hiring, and player selection, Vansh feels incredibly fortunate to be part of this unique chess league, engaging with fans and audiences.

“This league has set a new benchmark, making it both exciting and challenging,” he says to ‘The Bridge’, emphasising that the fan engagement has been thrilling and that chess is commanding the same level of excitement as other major sports leagues.

Elevating Chess and its Players

GCL, as a new and evolving concept, hasn’t had much mainstream exposure compared to other sports. Vansh sees this as a unique opportunity to be part of something fresh and groundbreaking.

“Since the chess world is relatively small, this league allows us to approach it with a startup mindset, creating new strategies and building the league from the ground up,” he explains.

For Vansh, this feels far more rewarding than working in a league that’s already well-established.

Within this dynamic environment, certain players have truly stood out, with Alireza Firouzja being Vansh’s favourite. This year in the GCL, Alireza has delivered outstanding performances, recently defeating top players like Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Viswanathan Anand.

“He has been an absolute powerhouse, causing serious challenges for his opponents,” he says. Vansh is also excited about two other players, Parham Maghsoodloo and Elisabeth Paehtz, who bring a unique energy and have engaged well with the league.

Vansh praises the chess players not only for their exceptional skills on the board but also for their willingness to engage with the media, helping to bring this wonderful game to a wider audience.

“The players are incredibly friendly, and their interaction makes it easy for our social media marketing efforts. They also offer valuable suggestions, helping us connect with other top players,” he shares excitedly.

Additionally, he notes, “The players appreciate the hospitality and atmosphere at GCL, and many have invited friends and family to watch the league,” emphasising that GCL has created an environment of friendliness and comfort.

Overcoming Challenges Through Teamwork

In launching a league of this magnitude, countless challenges arise, however, Vansh Sharma emphasises the crucial role of teamwork in effectively navigating these obstacles.

“The incredible support we receive from the entire team ensures we’re able to meet and often exceed our expectations,” he notes.

This collaborative spirit proves essential, especially when faced with the scale and complexity of the Global Chess League's operations.

“Everyone’s collective effort makes it less overwhelming and more of an exciting challenge,” Vansh reflects.

He credits Sameer Pathak, the CEO of the Global Chess League, for supporting him through these challenges and allowing him to grow both personally and professionally.

“Thanks to him, I am part of this league, surrounded by talented players, where I have cherished memorable moments, including signing some of the biggest names in the chess world,” he shares with gratitude and happiness.

Perks of being in the Sports Industry

Vansh wholeheartedly recommends working for a sports league, emphasising the unique opportunities it presents.

“It not only allows you to excel in a specific area but also exposes you to a wide range of real-world challenges that help you grow both personally and professionally,” he explains.

He highlights how working in a league offers the chance to collaborate with diverse groups—players, agencies, and professionals.

“This collaboration sharpens your skills and broadens your perspective,” he adds.

Ultimately, Vansh believes that the experience of engaging with so many different people truly prepares individuals for life, equipping them with invaluable insights and skills that extend beyond the realm of sports.

“The sports industry allows you to forge valuable connections with people, where you can gain so much simply by engaging in conversation,” he concludes.
