India's Koneru Humpy suffered a loss in the round 6 of the Women's Chess Grand Prix in Monaco against Aleksandra Goryachkina on Monday.

Humpy, playing with the black pieces, took Goryachkina by surprise, playing a novelty in the ninth move. But it was white, who ended up having a slight advantage after the following series of moves.

The Indian grandmaster continued to play accurately to hold an equal position but erred in the 39th move with just under a minute remaining on the clock.

The move proved fatal and Humpy resigned a few minutes later.

The loss dropped Humpy down in the standings. She is now placed sixth with three points out of a possible six.

Kateryna Lagno leads the competition currently with four points.

The other Indian in contention, Harika Dronavalli, is placed last with just two points.

Harika drew her game against Elizabeth Paehtz with the white pieces on Monday.

While Humpy will play Sarasadat Khademalsharieh on Tuesday in the seventh round, Harika will take on Batkhuyag Munguntuul.
