Carlsen returns as Global Chess League Season 4 begins in Bengaluru

Magnus Carlsen returns to the Global Chess League after a one-season absence as Season 4 of the team competition gets underway in Bengaluru on Saturday.

The fourth edition of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, a joint initiative of Tech Mahindra and FIDE, will feature six teams competing in a double round-robin format over nine days. The top two teams will advance to the Grand Finale on September 13.

Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers will have Carlsen back on their roster after the five-time world champion missed last year's edition in Mumbai. The Norwegian played for the Pipers in the first two seasons in Dubai and London.

"I am a little bit surprised to be back, seeing as we had a couple of really frustrating years for the team -- the first two years when I was playing. And then when I was away, the team won it all. So this time I'm just trying to do my best to not do any worse than last year," Carlsen said.

The world No. 1 will be joined at the Pipers by India's Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy, along with Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi.

Star power across six teams

Season 4 features several of the biggest names in world chess, with 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Viswanathan Anand and Ian Nepomniachtchi serving as icon players for their respective teams.

Two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings have retained much of their core, with Firouzja, Wei Yi, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Zhu Jiner leading their title challenge.

Kosteniuk said the team is targeting a third championship.

"I am very happy and excited to once again play for Triveni Continental Kings. It is a good feeling that we have won this title twice before, but it will be even nicer to add a third one here. So that's what we're aiming for," she said.

Anand, meanwhile, has switched from Ganges Grandmasters to PBG Alaskan Knights and will lead a young squad featuring Arjun Erigaisi, Abhimanyu Mishra and 15-year-old Turkish Grandmaster Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus.

The opening round will see PBG Alaskan Knights face FYERS American Gambits, followed by Triveni Continental Kings against Ganges Grandmasters and CheQ Mumba Masters against Alpine APL Pipers.

The league will continue to experiment with ways of presenting chess to a wider audience. Fans can follow individual boards and players through the GCL app, while coaches and captains will wear heart-rate monitors to track their stress levels during matches.

Each team fields six players across one Icon, two Superstar Men, two Superstar Women and one Prodigy board. Matches use a 20-minute rapid time control with a two-second increment from move 41.

Carlsen, who has increasingly focused on shorter formats after opting out of the classical World Championship cycle, said he remains interested in being part of chess's evolution.

"For me, it's interesting to be part of those innovations, but it's not necessarily an overarching goal," he said.

"For now, I like to play and I'm looking forward to competing here."

The GCL will be broadcast live for free on the official Tech Mahindra Global Chess League YouTube channel, with Hindi commentary also being introduced this season.
