India's chess grandmaster Koneru Humpy has once again etched her name in the history books, claiming the World Rapid Chess Championship title for the second time.

Humpy clinched the title on Sunday by defeating Indonesia's Irene Sukandar, finishing with 8.5 points from 11 rounds.

The 37-year-old Indian chess icon first won the rapid chess world title in 2019 in Georgia.

Her latest victory places her in elite company, joining China's Ju Wenjun as the only players to secure multiple world titles in this format.

This win adds to a landmark year for Indian chess, following D Gukesh’s victory over China's Ding Liren in the classical format World Championship earlier this year.

Humpy's consistency in rapid chess is well-documented, with a bronze medal in the 2012 Moscow event and a silver medal in last year’s championship held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

In the open category, Russia’s 18-year-old Volodar Murzin claimed the title, becoming the second-youngest FIDE World Rapid Champion after Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who won at 17.
