India's chess boom is no longer about a handful of stars. The October 2026 FIDE standard rating list, analysed by Chess Second, shows a nation that is strong at the top and getting deeper with a robust talent pipeline.
Pragg & Humpy lead the pack
R Praggnanandhaa remains India's No. 1 at 2763 after a two-point gain. Arjun Erigaisi holds second on 2746 despite losing 13 points, while Viswanathan Anand is third on 2739.
Meanwhile, the biggest move in the top five belonged to Gukesh D. His 8.5/11 at the Chess Olympiad earned him seven points and lifted him to 2710, one point ahead of Nihal Sarin (2709), into fourth place. Vidit Gujrathi (2693), Aravindh Chithambaram and V Pranav (both 2677), Pranesh M (2674) and Pentala Harikrishna (2648) complete the top 10.
With a top-10 average of 2703.6, India is ranked No. 2 among federations worldwide.
Among women, Koneru Humpy added nine points to reach 2518 and widen her lead. Divya Deshmukh (2488), Harika Dronavalli (2453), Vaishali Rameshbabu (2452, down 17) and Deekshitha Modipalli (2436) follow.
The standout performer, though, was 19-year-old Savitha Shri. She scored 9/10 at the women's Olympiad, gained 23 points and climbed from ninth to sixth.
The remarkable Pratitee Bordoloi
The real story, however, is the next Indian generation that is quietly building its prowess.
Fourteen-year-old Sanjay Narayanan P S gained a remarkable 230 points to reach 2356. Shaurya Chaudhary and Aarav Saish Amonkar, also 14, both crossed 2400 for the first time. And 13-year-old Pratitee Bordoloi, rated 2393, now holds the highest rating of any Indian girl in the year she turned 13, according to FIDE records since 2001.
These individual stories add up to depth.
India now has 105 active players aged 20 or under rated 2300 or above, up from 75 a year ago. The country has 19,882 active rated players, 189 more than in September, and 583 players received their first FIDE standard rating this month.
The October list also brings 30 new titles: 8 FIDE Masters, 13 Candidate Masters, 1 Woman International Master, 3 Woman FIDE Masters and 5 Woman Candidate Masters.
The list also puts today's rise in historical context: only four players have led Indian chess since 2001, and Anand held the top spot longest, for 23 years and 1 month in total. Humpy Koneru has led the women's list since September 2022, and her total reign of 23 years and 6 months is the longest of the three women to hold the No. 1 spot.
For a country that once waited decades for its first Grandmaster, the numbers point one way: the pipeline is full, and the gap between India's established elite and its teenagers is closing fast.
