D Gukesh, India’s rising chess star, is brimming with confidence as he prepares for his maiden World Chess Championship match against China’s Ding Liren, beginning Monday.

At 18, Gukesh is the youngest challenger in decades and approaches the historic showdown with clarity.

"I’m facing Ding Liren, one of the best players in the world for over a decade. My focus is to be the best version of myself in every game," Gukesh said during a pre-tournament press conference.

Gukesh’s fine form contrasts with Liren’s recent struggles, but the young Indian remains cautious. "Even if Ding is at his best or not, it doesn’t matter. If I keep playing good chess and stay positive, I’m confident I have all the chances in the world," he added.

This year’s championship marks a historic milestone as it is the first time in 138 years that two Asian players are competing for the coveted title. The winner will take home a share of the $2.5 million prize fund.

Ding Liren, the reigning champion, admitted to struggling with form in recent games. “My recent performances have been below my peak. I need to regain confidence and fighting spirit by revisiting some of my best games,” Liren said.

Acknowledging the challenge Gukesh poses, the Chinese maestro remarked, “He is young but has displayed maturity in many aspects. If we both perform at our best, it will be a great match.”

With the chess world eagerly anticipating this clash of generations and regions, both players are set to make history in their unique ways.
