Chennai Grandmasters: Arjun faces his first loss, tied at top with Levon

In a shocking turn of events, world number two Arjun Erigaisi faced a shocking defeat against fellow Indian Aravindh Chithambaram in the sixth round of Chennai Grandmasters in Chennai on Sunday.

With this, the tournament is now completely open before heading for its final round as Arjun is now in tied top position, having 4/6 points along with Levon Aronian of USA, who drew his match with Vidit Gujrathi.

On the other hand, Arvindh and Iran's Amin Tabatabaei are just half a point behind the leaders, which makes the final round action a much more interesting contest with all four players having an eye on the title.

Arjun heading into the sixth round, setting his eyes on the title as he has the chance of winning it before the final round but Aravindh has other plans and he registered his first win of the tournament as one of the biggest.

Aravindh will now take on Parham Maghsoodloo of Iran in the final round while Arjun is up against France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in a thrilling last-round action.

Pranav maintains his lead in challengers.

V Pranav continued his unbeaten run in the challengers tournament with a draw against M Pranesh in the sixth round as he is still the lone leader with 5/6 points before heading towards the final round.

On the other hand, Leon Luke Mendonca closed in on Pranav with a solid win against Karthikeyan Murali in the sixth round as he is now just half a point behind the leader before the final round.

The final round is all set for a showdown as Leon and Pranav will be taking on each other in a potential title decider of the Challengers event of Chennai Grandmasters.
