Aruna Budda Reddy found her moment in the spotlight not long ago when she won India's first ever medal in Gymnastics, at the Gymnastics World Cup. But no one knows about her coach who helped her on her way to success. Coach N Brij Kishore has been working at the Sports Authority of Telangana State for the past 25 years, and yet, has absolutely no financial aid to fall back on when he is suffering from 4th stage cancer. The issue is that Coach Kishore worked as a contractual coach, a position that does not get the benefits of medical insurance or health cards. Learning of the illness that the gymnastics coach is suffering from, Dinakar Babu, VC & MD, SATS, had granted the coach Rs 2 lakh towards the treatment. Kishore's family used that money to clear the bill at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology where he was admitted earlier. Since then he has been shifted to the Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute and the daily expenses being borne by the family is between ten or fifteen thousand rupees, which is a huge pressure to bear, given the family's financial situation.
As reported by the TOI,
a SATS Coach said, "Despite the meagre salary and the lack of facilities at the gymnasium, Kishore worked hard with Aruna and turned her into a world champion. But today there is no one to help him and his family. It is a very unfortunate situation for a coach, who gave his life for the promotion of sports in the state.' It is unfortunate how so very often, two people doing the same work get treated so very differently. The coaches of the likes of P.V.Sindhu or Mithali Raj get showered by acknowledgment and rewards from the same state. But Reddy's coach whose helping hand gave India their first moment on the podium in the world cup is on a hospital bed while his family is scrambling to keep his treatment running.
