What started as a regulation boxing match turned into an international uproar when Algeria's Imane Khelif took on Italian boxer Angela Carini in the women's 66kg boxing event at the Paris Olympics.
Carini took a punch in her face from Khelif inside the first 30 seconds, and after just 46 seconds, decided to stop the fight.
Imane Khelif's participation in the Paris Olympics was controversial, given that the International Boxing Association banned her from participating in the 2023 Women's World Championships, having failed to meet the eligibility criteria.
But the IOC cleared her participation and thus began the chain of events leading up to now.
"All this controversy makes me sad," Carini told Italian newspaper Gazzetta delllo Sport.
"Actually, I want to apologize to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke," she added.
After the game, Carina refused to shake Khelif's hand. However, she said that if she met Khelif again, she would embrace her.
