24-year-old bronze and silver medallist pugilist Simranjit Kaur has two precious medals, but no job. The boxer, who won a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championship and a bronze at the 2018 World Championship, is on a job hunt to which her state government, Punjab, has paid no heed yet.

Hailing from Ludhiana’s Chakar village, the Simranjit lives with her family of three siblings and the mother, while her father, who worked at a grocery store to make Rs. 4,000 a month, passed away in 2018 due to a heart attack.

Since then, the family is entirely dependent on Simranjit's

earnings, i.e. the money she receives at international tournaments.

"I have given my application to the Punjab government, but I am yet to get a response," Simranjit told The Times of India. "Last year, Punjab Police had advertised for some posts but they were mostly for the rank of a constable. I hope the government at least gives me a sub-inspector level job.”

Currently, Simranjit is pursuing her graduation - BA second

year - from Chandigarh University to be able to meet the criteria set by the

government for job seekers. While she wants to work in any sector of the Punjab

government, she is open to other fields of work too.

She is the sole breadwinner of the family and her two younger brothers are still studying. Her elder sister is employed with the BSF but she is married and lives with her husband.

Recently, Simranjit won the 60kg trial against veteran

boxer Sarita Devi and thus earned the right to participate in India’s

Olympics qualifiers to be played in February.
