Six-time boxing world champion Mary Kom defeated Nikhat Zareen after a split verdict was pronounced in the finals of the 51kg trials to book her spot in the Olympic Qualifers that will be held in February in Wuhan, China. In a bout that hardly had any clear punches, the stalwart won 9-1 to qualify for the next stage.

Zareen, who had asked for a trial after the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) was keen to send Mary Kom to China directly, failed to put up a fight in the round, and could not control her tears after the results were declared. There was some controversy in the end as well, after officials from the Telangana Boxing Association, the state Zareen is from, cried foul after the results. AP Reddy, a representative, was vociferous in his protests and stated, "How will boxing grow amid this kind of politics?"

The situation was doused by BFI president Ajay Singh, who asked Reddy to leave the ringside.

The other boxers who sealed their spots for the Qualifiers were Sakshi Choudhary, Simranjit Kaur and Lovlina Borgohain and Pooja Rani.

While Choudhary defeated Sonia Lather in the 57kg weight division by relentlessly attacking, Simranjit got the better of former world champion Sarita Devi in the 60kg category. The national champion Simranjit was quick on her reflexes and her precision, which left Sarita in a corner.

Lovlina, in the 69kg weoght category, and Pooja Rani, competing in the 75kg weight division, too won their respective bouts by a unanimous decision to make the squad for the Asia-Oceania Qualifiers that will be held from February 3 to February 14, 2020.
