Women's Boxing Nationals: Glittering Golds For Sarjubala,Sarita and Sonia
Former world silver medalist Sarjubala Devi (48), bagged gold and the best boxer trophy at the National Women's Boxing Championship in Rohtak. Representing Manipur, Sarjubala brought the lone gold for the state. The Railway Sports Promotion Board emerged as overall champions in the nationals. Sarjubala beat Haryana's Ritu 3-2 in the final to claim her second and successive national title. In another summit clash, Sarita Devi won herself gold when she dismantled RSPB's Pavitra's chances of getting the coveted medal. The leading clash of the day was between world silver-medallist Sonia Lather, representing RSPB, and world youth champion Shashi Chopra, turning up for Haryana, in the 57kg category. Experience clearly played a role in the manner in which Sonia outclassed young Shashi and walked easily away with a win. All India Police's Meena Kumari (54 kg) beat Haryana's Manisha and claimed gold while RSPB's Rajesh Narwal defeated Monika (UP) and won flyweight crown. Haryana who is known for power-packed boxing, fell short to claim medals. Haryana was able to secure only one one gold medal which was won by Pooja Rani (75 kg) which she won by defeating Assam's Alari Boro. In overall results, Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) secured five golds and two bronze medals.
