Mary Kom bags Gold in Polish Boxing tournament
The Silesian Open Boxing Tournament for women in Gliwice, Poland concluded with Mary Kom winning her third international Gold medal of the year in a tournament which saw some splendid performances from the Indian women's boxing contingent. The Youth category yielded a single Gold medal while the Junior contingent returned with 13 medals which included 6 Golds. The lone Gold in the Youth category was won by young Jyoti Gulia(51kg), the AIBA World Women's Youth Boxing Gold medalist back in 2017. Jyoti has maintained her consistency since her major breakthrough and will also be representing India at the upcoming Youth Olympics. Senior boxer Sarita Devi (60kg) had to end her campaign with Bronze. Perhaps this was the most controversial decision of the lot after she lost out 0-5 to Kazakhstan's Karina Ibragimova. "It was a controversial decision. Sarita was clearly better but judges did not rule in her favour, even the crowd got behind her after the loss because everyone could see," said one of the coaches travelling with the team was quoted as saying by PTI. Coming back to Mary Kom, the 35-year old was back to the ring after she took a break from the Asian Games to focus on the upcoming World Championships. She faced up against Kazakhstan's Aigerim Kassanayeva in a bout that she convincingly won 5-0. This is the third International level Gold of the year for the former Olympic medalist who had earlier won the India Open and the Commonwealth Games previously. Two more Bronzes in the senior category came courtesy Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Pooja Rani (81kg). Lovlina lost out to Poland's Karolina Koszewska in a split 1-4 verdict. This decision also attracted a certain amount of flak from the travelling Indian contingent. Pooja Rani who was also defeated by a local favourite Polish name Agata Kaczmarska. While the result read a 2-3 split decision in favour of the Polish, this decision was without controversy.
