In India, where youngsters constantly juggle academics and sports, parental pressure often becomes the decisive factor, leading many to abandon their athletic dreams.
In the vibrant town of Contai, West Bengal, Sounak Maikup dares to challenge this trend.
An eighth-grader at Contai Public School, Sounak may not be the tallest player on the court, but his determination towers over many.
His dream? To make a mark in basketball—an arena traditionally dominated by the tall and athletically gifted.
Sounak spoke exclusively to The Bridge about his journey, the obstacles he faces, and his unwavering resolve.
Family opposition
From the very beginning, Sounak faced strong resistance from his family regarding his love for basketball.
"My mother wants me to become a doctor or an engineer and has never supported my passion. For them, sports are good as a co-curricular activity but not as a profession. It’s upsetting that even today, sports aren’t taken seriously," he shared.
Despite this, his love for the game took root five years ago on the very courts of his school. Initially, he played only because his parents insisted on it for fitness.
"At first, I was reluctant. I disliked the warm-up sessions and was often bullied for my height and chubby figure. But slowly, basketball became the love of my life," he reminisced.
Emerging talent and the roadblocks
Overcoming personal challenges and external skepticism, Sounak quickly became a vital player for his school team.
He led Contai Public School to a third-place finish at the prestigious West Bengal Inter School Basketball Tournament, where he was named the Most Valuable Player and top scorer.
Representing Purba Medinipur in the Sub Junior State Championship, he recorded a tournament-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, proving his growing influence on the court.
With multiple MVP titles and a strong defensive presence, he has established himself as one of the most promising young basketball players in the region.
His school basketball coach recognizes his potential and commitment.
"Sounak is truly passionate about the sport. He can make it to the Indian National Men’s Basketball Team. However, the biggest challenge he faces is family pressure. His mother has even asked me to dissuade him from pursuing basketball as a career. While her concerns are valid—sports can be financially and physically risky—I will do everything I can to help him achieve his dream," the coach said.
A mother’s love and a son’s resolve
Sounak’s mother, while opposing his basketball dreams, only wishes for his well-being.
To her, a stable profession like medicine or engineering ensures security, unlike the uncertainties of a sports career.
"I worry about his future. A career in sports is full of risks. I want him to have a secure life without financial struggles or the fear of injuries," she said, her voice filled with concern.
Despite their differences, Sounak remains understanding of his mother’s perspective.
"I want to fulfill my family's dreams too. I may become a doctor, engineer, or government employee, but only after achieving my basketball dream. Nowadays, it’s possible to balance both. My parents don’t realize that one can excel in sports and still have a professional career," he explained.
His dedication is unwavering. "Even before my school exams, I attend practice—much to my parents’ dismay. My mother tries to convince me to quit daily, but I refuse to give up. I believe hard work pays off," he said with determination.
The uncertain future
Despite his confidence, Sounak acknowledges that family pressure might eventually force him to abandon his dream.
"Destiny can be cruel sometimes. If it comes to a point where I have no choice but to comply with my family’s wishes, I will accept it, but with great sadness. Basketball will always be my first love, and even if I am forced to stop playing, I will ensure that the game never leaves me," he said, his eyes filled with determination.
For many, sports is just a hobby, but for Sounak, basketball is more than a game—it’s his passion, his identity, and his biggest dream.
His story is a testament to the struggle between ambition and expectation, a tale of perseverance against the odds.
While his mother’s love and concern shape his future, his own resolve continues to fuel his journey.
