Badminton players, one of India's biggest medal hopes at the Olympics since Saina Nehwal won a bronze medal in London 2012, opened their campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Saturday, July 27, evening at Paris' Porte de la Chapelle Arena.

In men's singles, Lakshya Sen, placed in Group L, ran into a tricky opponent, Kevin Cordon of Guatemala, who is the semifinalist of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

World No. 3 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty - India's biggest medal hope in badminton this time around - were up against France's last-minute entrants Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar in their opening Group C match.

Satwik-Chirag won the French Open Super 750 for the second time earlier this year at the venue of the Paris 2024.

In the day's final match, the women's doubles pairing of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa had their task cut out against World No. 8 Kong Hee Yong and Kim So Yeong during a Group C clash.

Head to Head: Satwik-Chirag vs Corvee-Labar

World No. 40 Corvee and Labar and World No. 3 Satwik and Chirag are familiar opponents.

The Indian duo last met the French pair in January in the round of 16 at the Malaysia Open Super 1000. Satwik-Chirag trounced Corvee and Labar in straight games in 39 minutes.

Their first meeting came at the French Open Super 750 in 2023 when Satwik-Chirag met Corvee and Labar in the first round. There too, the Indian pair won in straight games in 35 minutes.

The French pair, Corvee and Labar, qualified for the men's doubles event at the Paris Olympics after a successful intervention from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

CAS urged BWF to accommodate Corvee and Labar due to the point calculation errors in the BWF's Road to Paris rankings.
