India’s top shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the women’s singles second round of the 2026 Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The two-time Olympic medalist defeated Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight games 25-23, 21-16, extending her head-to-head dominance to 21-1 in their 22nd meeting.
The 30-year-old, who has shown improved form with back-to-back quarterfinal finishes in recent tournaments, has also re-entered the world top 10 for the first time in 3 years.
She had a good start to the match today, having a 19-15 lead in the first game, but then the Thai shuttler came back and forced extra points.
Sindhu held her composure and won the opening game after a long stretch, saving a game point and taking an early advantage in the match.
The second game was much easier for the Indian shuttler as she maintained her lead from the start and closed out the match in straight games.
In the men's doubles, the young Indian pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun claimed their first-ever win in a Super1000 tournament as a pair.
They showed quality aggressive play and defeated Malaysia's Nur Azriyn and Wee Tan Kiong in a comfortable straight-game affair, 21-18, 21-10.
On the other hand, the former world medalists Srikanth Kidambi and Lakshya Sen lost their respective first-round matches in straight games.
Kidambi couldn't hold on to his big lead and lost 19-21, 15-21 to Yushi Tanaka of Japan, while Lakshya bowed down to home favourite Alwi Farhan, 19-21, 16-21.
The young Indian women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also suffered a defeat in their opening match on return to the international circuit after three months
