Indian campaign ends in the second round of Hong Kong Open 2024
Treesa and Gayatri in women's doubles while Sikki and Sumeeth in mixed doubles lost their respective second-round matches.
Indian shuttler's dismal run on the BWF World Tour continued as none of the Indian players was able to make it to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 tournament on Thursday.
India had two representations in the second round of this competition, one each in women's doubles and mixed doubles discipline.
But, both the pairing of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand in women's doubles and Sikki and Sumeeth Reddy in mixed doubles lost their respective matches in straight games.
Firstly, the young women's doubles pairing of Treesa and Gayatri bowed out of the competition with a tough loss against the Paris Olympics silver medalist Chinese pair of Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, 11-21, 20-22.
In the second game, the Indian pair saved a couple of match points to force a deuce but an unforced error from Treesa on the final match point ended their journey in the tournament.
Later in the evening session, the experienced mixed doubles pairing of Sikki Reddy and Sumeeth Reddy also suffered a second-round exit.
They conceded a straight-game (11-21, 20-22) defeat to the Malaysian pairing of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie in a match that lasted just for 30 minutes.
This loss confirmed the end of the campaign for Indian shuttles in the second round of the Hong Kong Open 2024.
