BWF World Tour Finals: Treesa/Gayatri knocked out after second loss

The sole Indian representation at the ongoing BWF World Tour Finals 2024, the women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand exited the tournament on Friday.

The Indian pair lost their second group stage against world number four Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan.

Treesa/Gayatri lost 17-21 and 13-21 in straight games in a 49-minute match.

The Indian pair will finish the tournament with two losses and one win in the group stage.

The Indian pair started well in the first game keeping it tight against the higher-ranked opponents.

Despite the Indians starting well, the Japanese pair of Matsuyama and Shida started gaining control after a couple of errors from Treesa/Gayatri.

The game moved at a fast pace and the Indian pair were trailing by 9-11 at the mid-game interval. However, after the interval, the Japanese pair upped the ante and took consecutive seven points to lead 18-10.

The Indian pair fought back and took five points to make it 17-19. However, two consecutive mistakes from Treesa and Gayatri both meant that the Indian pair lost the first game 19-21.

In the second game, Treesa/Gayatri went into the lead in the early exchanges with 4-3 but the Japanese pair capitalized on the string of mistakes by the Indian pair.

The Japanese pair raced away to a big lead of six points and kept it intact inching closer to the win. The Indian pair took some points but it was too late for a comeback as Matsuyama/Shida clinched the game 21-13.

Treesa/Gayatri earlier defeated the Malaysian pair Pearly Tan and Thinnah Muralitharan yesterday and lost the first game again World number one pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning.
