BWF World C'ships Day 1: Ayush Shetty stuns world No. 1, PV Sindhu wins -Highlights

India is hosting the BWF World Championships for the first time in 17 years, and it started with the preliminary round at IG Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.
There were five Indian matches on the opening day, with PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty, Treesa/Gayatri, Hariharan/Arjun and Kavipriya/ Simran in action.
Five-time world Medalist PV Sindhu began her campaign with a comfortable win against a much lower-ranked Irish shuttler, Sophia Noble, in the women's singles round of 64.
Meanwhile, the most exciting match of the day was between Ayush Shetty and defending champion China's Shi Yu Qi in the men's singles round of 64.

After missing the last edition because of injury concerns, the young Indian duo has returned to the global event in front of a home crowd.
They start their campaign against the Spanish duo, aiming to improve their performance from the 2023 edition, where they were knocked out in the third round.

The top Indian women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will start their campaign against Paula López and Lucía Rodríguez of Spain.

Treesa-Gayatri has defeated this Spanish duo at the 2026 US Open in three games, 21-12, 14-21, 21-13.

Hariharan-Arjun advances to second round after an injury walkover
Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun started their campaign with a win against the Irish duo, who were forced to give an injury walkover in the second game.
The Indian duo looked good and clinched the first game comfortably 21-16, despite the Irish pair saving four game points.
In the second game, Hariharan and Arjun were leading 6-4 when Ireland's Scott Guildea felt some discomfort and decided not to continue.
Final score: Hariharan-Arjun 21-16, 6-4r Scott-Paul
