Ayush Shetty headed to Aichi-Nagoya one the back of some stellar results on the BWF circuit. And true to expectations, he delivered he good, delivering crucial wins to claim bronze in the men's team event.
The 2026 Asian Games was a maiden continental outing for the 21-year-old, which makes the result a measure of how fast he has moved. He arrived after a breakout year, including a silver at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, where despite losing the final to Shi Yuqi, he emerged as the first Indian man to win singles silver there.
Forging upsets
Before the Games, Shetty spoke to The Bridge about how a young player beats established names. At the Asia Championships he came from a game down to beat world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn 10-21, 21-19, 21-17 in the semifinal. Months later, at the World Championships in New Delhi, he opened with a 21-14, 13-21, 21-19 win over defending champion Shi Yuqi. He credited video analysis, tactical variations, composure and mental visualisation.
Fueling and recovery matter as much as tactics, he said. Nutrition, injury management and a steady recovery routine let him stay consistent across a taxing calendar. The conversation formed part of Fast & Up's #FuelForward series.
Olympic-sized ambitions
Shetty is clear about his ambitions. The Olympics are his biggest goal, and he wants to win at the World Championships too. For now though, he is trying to stay grounded as expectations rise and senior coaches guide his game.
If the next few seasons go to plan, Aichi-Nagoya will be remembered as his first step.
