The prestigious 2026 All England Open Super 1000 commenced on Tuesday with Lakshya Sen taking down world No 1 Shi Yu Qi of China in the first round.

Elsewhere, Tanisha Crasto-Dhruv Kapila also registered a first-round win, while Unnati Hooda, Malvika Bansod and the women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand took an exit.

    Sen seems to have activated some speed boost. Extremely fast from the fore court as he returns three or four shots back-to-back, before Shi eventually relents. 1-1.

    A brilliant cross court smash from Sen and he saves the first game point. But that's all he could do.

    Shi picks the bone out of the shuttle the very next rally and hits it flush onto Sen's body. The world No 1 takes the second game 21-19 to force a decider.

    We are already 56 minutes into the match and there's still a game left!

    Lakshya Sen had opened up a two-point lead at 8-6, but Shi Yu Qi wins five very quick points to reverse the scoreline.

    The Chinese world champion leads 11-8 at the mid-game interval. Sen has some work to do, if he is to win this in straight games.

    Shi Yu Qi's lifts have been questionable and Sen is taking advantage of it. He is able to leap and nail the smashes to perfection from the mid-court.

    The Indian has equalised at 6-6.

    Shi Yu Qi getting the better of the early exchanges in second game. He had a 4-1 lead, before Sen won two in a row. The Chinese leads 5-3, after a shot from the Indian lands wide.

    Lakshya Sen takes the opening game

    It would have been a tragedy if he didn't win this, did Sen. He was up 18-12 before Shi fought back in his trademark fashion.

    The Chinese shuttler saved three game points, but Sen eventually prevails 23-21 to win the opening game. It took the Indian 30 minutes to close it out.
