World U20 C'ships: India's 4x400m mixed relay team finish 5th in final
The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team failed to maintain their tempo in the final after finishing third in the heats. Amanat Kamboj qualified for the women's discus throw final.
The Indian 4x400m mixed relay team failed to make a podium finish at the World U20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru on Tuesday night.
The quartet of Jay Kumar, Neeru Pathak, Rihan Chaudhary and Sandramol Sabu finished second in Heat 1 behind Australia and third overall in the heats by clocking their season-best timing of 3:22.54s.
However, in the final, the Indian team could not maintain their tempo and finished fifth, with China, who finished fourth in the heats, winning the bronze medal with a timing of 3:21.27s.
India clocked 3:22.92s in the final to finish fifth behind Jamaica.
The Australian quartet of Jordan Gilbert, Bella Pasquali, Jack Deguara and Sophia Gregorevic won the gold medal with a timing of 3:19.27s, as Poland's Jakub Szarapo, Wiktoria Gajosz, Stanislaw Strzelecki and Zofia Tomczyk won the silver medal.
In the previous edition, India won the silver medal.
In the women's discus throw, Amanat Kamboj did well to qualify for the final with a throw of 49.98m. She has a personal and season best of 50.45m. She will aim for a podium finish on Wednesday.
Below-par shows and missed chances
In women's 100m dash, India's Abinaya Rajarajan clocked 11.95s to finish 30th in the heats and failed to secure a place in the final.
In men's javelin throw, Rohan Yadav and Dipanshu Sharma threw 67.07m and 66.26m in the qualifying round and exited the competition.
In the men's hammer throw event, India's Prateek failed to qualify for the final as he finished 27th with a throw of 62.69m. Earlier this year, he qualified for the Worlds with a massive throw of 68.16m, which is also his season and personal best.
In the men's shot put, Siddharth Choudhary also missed out on qualification for the final as he could achieve a best throw of 18.40m and finished 16th in the overall ranking.
In women's long jump, Pavana Nagaraj was nowhere close to her season and personal best (6.32m) as she could pull off a 5.74m jump and missed out on qualification for the final.
Pavana finished 19th overall as Laura Martinez of Spain achieved her season-best jump of 6.37m to qualify for the final.
Similarly, in men's 800m, Sahil Khan was way behind in the race as he clocked 2:01.32s and missed a chance to qualify for the semifinals.
In the 3000m women's steeplechase, Ekta Dey clocked 10:50.09s and missed out on qualification for the final as she finished 25th in the heats.
