A day that started with so much enthusiasm and positivity eventually ended with disappointment once again here on the second day of athletics at the Tokyo Olympics.

Sreeshankar Murali had a rather disappointing outing in the men's long jump qualification as he only managed to get the best effort of 7.69m which was never going to be enough to qualify for the finals.

India would be happy with Kamalpreet Kaur's qualification to the finals in what was the only major positive for the day not just in athletics but across all sports.

At the end of the day in the final event, we saw Elaine Thompson-Herah winning the gold and setting a new Olympic record in the process as well in the women's 100m event with a time of 10.61s.

That's all for today and thank you very much for joining us in the coverage.

    Women's Discus Throw - Group B

    Seema Punia knocked OUT :(

Her attempt of 60.57m isn't enough to take her to the finals.

All Indian hopes are now on Kamalpreet Kaur who has looked really impressive so far and now looks favourite for a medal in the event.

    Women's Discus Throw - Group B

    63.97!!!

What a massive effort by Kamalpreet Kaur. She's missed out on automatic qualification just by 0.03m.

The attempt puts her second not only in Group B but in the overall standings.

She has pretty much sealed her qualification in the final unless something very dramatic happens.
