The Kannur Sports Meet hit the schools across Kerala last Saturday amid a storm of hype, with as many as 1904 athletes vying for top honours in about 98 events. Olympians P T Usha, M D Vatsamma, Baby Aloysius, Tinku Luka, and Jisna Mathew graced the event with their presence. But the razzmatazz did not stop there. The reason? A descendant of Usha’s family was one of the runners in the event.

P T Usha
In 1985 she won 5 gold medals and 1 bronze medal in the Asian Track and Field Championships at Jakarta. This track record of Usha in the world of athletics has not been matched or surpassed till date by any athlete.

With her sights set on the finish line, Usha kept a track of seventh-grader Samrudhha as she ran into the sub-junior 600m final on Monday. She stood right on the track with a stopwatch in her hand. Samrudhha is the daughter of Usha’s younger sister Zuma. But this is not the first time that someone from her family has participated in an athletics meet and won accolades. In fact, according to a report by Asianet, her family has brought home more than 100 national and international medals.

The Sports Meet is set to be concluded on Tuesday. The athletes who meet the qualification mark in the event will be privileged with a chance to represent the state in the National School Athletic Championship on December 4.
