It was a disappointing start for the Indian contingent on day one of athletics events at the Tokyo Olympics. Avinash Sable, MP Jabir, Dutee Chand, and the mixed relay team were all knocked out from the heats.
Avinash Sable did set a new national record and was also a bit unlucky as he finished 13th fastest overall but was knocked out because of the level of competition in heat 2.

Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco finishes first, followed by Topi Raitanen from Finland in second and France's Alexis Phelut in third. The three athletes advance to the final.
All that promise shown by the Ethiopian Tadese Takele faded away in the final 1000m.
